Saturday, May 9th was the regular second Saturday meeting for the Absaroka Porsche Club.

It’s All About P.C.A.
P
eople. Cars. Activities.

The Good News Just Keeps On Coming!!!
Out Saturday meeting was well attended with fourteen members and guests. Eric’s new logo and the All Euro Car Show posters were well received. I feel the excitement for the club events keeps building. This coming weekend 16-17 at Lewistown’s DE days will be great for those who like to drive their cars like they were built to drive.

The following weekend, May 23, we will take a nice drive to see Dr. Batty’s private car collection in Sheridan, Wyoming. He has a barn with about 30 U.S. and European cars restored and nine others in varying stages of restoration. Dr. Batty’s barn is about 5 miles north of Sheridan, so plan on packing a lunch as we will arrive there about noon and probably won’t want to leave anytime soon. The Dr’s place is about two miles off the Decker Road turn off and can be seen from the bridge over the Interstate.

The other good news – after our meeting on Saturday I called John Small, also in Sheridan, about his Porsches. He has 30-50 older 911’s that he is working on repairing and restoring for sale. John’s place is in town behind the old Sheridan Inn.

I am open to idea’s for a gift to thank Dr. Batty for allowing us to see his collection. We have some funds in the treasury and I believe this would be an appropriate expense.

The plan for May 23rd tour as of right now is:
- Arrive - Flying ‘J’ truck stop about 9:30 Sat. May 23rd, sign the waiver and leave at 10:00 am – Pack a lunch.
- Arrive at Dr. Batty’s close to 12:00 – view collection until about 2-3
- Drive into Sheridan to see John Small’s Porsches 3-4 pm.
- Return home or you can stay the night if you choose too. We will get together for dinner.

Lucy and I will be staying with my sister Saturday night so maybe we can see what Sheridan night life is like!
More FUN in May; DE day 16-17 in Lewistown and tour to Sheridan 23rd.

Valentine Tour Saturday, February 14, 2009
Although the numbers were few we had a good time. Will Stuart layed out a nice tour, Lucy and I did a check out run - made a few changes; Will made the changes on paper, but no one checked out those changes. Sooo, after a few instructions thing went, shall we say a little funny. It gave us something to laugh and talk about later. No one got lost and we had a good drive out to Strokers in Huntley.

The food was good, the company was even better. Lucy took some great pic's. If you want to know what Will is laughing about so hard you will have to ask him. You might say what happened on the tour stays with the tour. Jeanette will have the minutes of the meeting in the next newsletter.
Hope to see you Thursday at the March 12th meeting to help kick off plans for the All Euro Car Show. Please RSVP if you can make it as the space we have is somewhat limited.

June 9th Meeting in Billings

Meeting was at the Windmill Restaurant in Billings. Eight club members joined in for a review of upcoming German Car Show. Presiding was Jeanette Armstrong, Absaroka President, Fred - Vice President & Lucy Magers, Graham Beckett, Roger Nelson, Tom Yelbington, Steve Homec and Bill Witcher. Good meeting and since so many showed up in their Porsches, Fred Magers gathered us all for a "photo op". Show plans are in process and more will be reported at the next meeting. Until a poster or brochure is available, you can print out the GERMAN SHOW page and distribute it to interested participants. Although it is not until August, lets start spreading the word, particularly to the BMW, Audi, Mercedes and VW people you might know. Oh, don't forget the other German Marques that may be around such as Borgward, DKW etc.

Our biggest fan was on his way across campus to go practice for his job as a pianist at The Billings Hotel that night. He was walking across the green when he spotted the cars. He immediately walked over and stayed for nearly 30 minutes visiting with each person and enjoying the cars. He loved Roger Nelson's Boxster and wanted his picture taken next to it.

SPECIAL NOTE: We did not get a photo of Stan Everson's 911, if you have one email it to me.

Barbeque At The Grunsteads: Sunday, April 30, 2006
Although the day started out rather cloudy many of us where pleasantly surprised to see just over twelve Porsches grace the driveway and street at member Bill Grundstead's beautiful home on the west side of Billings. Bill and his wife Anita were great hosts! It was wonderful to see many old friends and a lot of new faces at this special event. I was delighted to see Fred and Lucy Magers' 944 again after a long absence. The food was great and the fellowship was even greater. Even Bill's skill as the grill-master was fun to watch. I want to thank Bill and Anita for hosting this event.

Report from 2006 Porsche Parade

Via Email -Well we made it to Portland and back home in one piece. Parade Portland was a nice event with 900 cars registered. It was a sold out event. Diana and I stayed with our friend the Whitaker's for two nights and got to see a concert by the band Pink Martini (a very neat group, salsa flavored music/NPR/ guest musicians).
We displayed our 944T in the Parade Paddock, which is a non judged car show that is run with the concours, on Monday. On Tuesday we went on the gimmick rally which was new to the Parade schedule of events this year. The rally was over 200 miles of gorgeous Oregon scenery.

On Wednesday I worked the autocross on the National Protest Committee and consquently I did not get to run the autocross on the Portland International Raceway. On Thursday we drove to the Oregon coast with the Evers' and had a great time at two airplane museums - Tillamook Museum and the Evergreen Aviation Museum at McMinnville (the Spruce Goose is at Evergreen). We stopped at a winery to buy cabernet sauvigon flavored fudge (it is so good!) on the way back to Portland. Friday was a goof-off day and the final banquet that night.

We got to spend time with our daughter Brooke on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We hadn't seen her in two years, so we really enjoyed her company. We also go to have dinner with our friends Gary & Sherry Laughton on Wednesday evening.

On our way out to Portland we stayed overnight in Spokane and were able to see our grandson Zane Veile on Friday morning for about an hour. We miss him.

In the attached photo you will see us with Sally Carrera, one of the stars of the Disney movie "Cars." Porsche brought the car to Portland to display it for the week. We got posters which we will give to our grandkids along with the pohot of grandma and pappa. Sorry about the grain in the photo.

Premium fuel was around $3.29 per gallon in Portland, and did not vary too much in Idaho, Washington or Montana. Our 944T made 29.5 mpg on one of the legs in Montana at about 80mph, and consistantly made 27.5 mpg at speed.

It is nice to be home and to be back in contact with my friends via email and phone.
Sincerely,
David/Diana Veile

More on Parade from Dave Veile
There were three entrants from Absaroka at the Parade Portland. They included Steven Gies, Joe Evers and his wife Robin, and David Veile and his wife Diana. Also in Portland from our region, but not registered, was Fred Magers and his wife Lucy.

To my knowledge, Steven Gies placed second in his class in the autocross driving a friends 911 RufTurbo. Nice friend Steve, and good driving too! Joe Evers placed third in the early 911 section of the Technical Quiz. Way to go Joe! The tech quiz is a tough, mind bending experience.

We held a region dinner meeting on Wednesday evening with only Steven Gies missing. However we were able to get all of the Big Sky Region entrants to have dinner with us. They were Dave Cooley and Randy Cheney and his wife Jeanette. I believe that Randy placed first in his class at the autocross. Dave Cooley finally had his 928 painted one color: RED. It is no longer the Brown Thang, but rather just the Thang. He had some suspension tuning problems during the autocross, and then on Friday DE Day, he encountered engine problems. I am sure that he will have Thang ready for Lewistown in September.

It did not rain a single time during the week which was punctuated with 77-85 degree days. Great weather for Portland as it had been 104 the week before.

Our friend Bill Noblitt from Hooper, UT. (former Yellowstone Region Pres.) had his light blue Speedster entered in the Concours. It is a truly gorgeously restored car, all done by Wild Willie hisself. If he didn't win his class in the concour, he should have. He and our former Zone Rep. Dick Grant partnered in the Speedster during the TSD Rally. I understand that they place 6th overall. By the way, Dick has lost a lot of weight and looks great. He was in Portland on Monday and Tuesday. He told me that he is going to totally retire after his current contract to teach drivers ed. ends.

H.C. Kayser was there, but I never did actually see him. He is a former member and past pres. of our region who lives in Richland, WA.

Joe and Robin got to spend some time at Porsche Obsolete on Thursday afternoon, and had a personal guided tour from Gary Emory. Joe was really impressed with the treatment they gave him, and he even got to ask some technical questions with one of Emory's service techs. I would encourage anyone going to the Portland area to take the time to stop at the Emory's and see a huge supply of NOS Porsche parts. They also are a Porsche recycler. Their place is just about two miles south of the Evergreen Aviation Museum at McMinnville.

The Goody Store was stocked with the usual Porsche and PCA items. We picked up a grill badge for Bob Pettit who used to belong to the Oregon Region. There were plenty of technical sessions to take in during the week. The art show had some really nice quilts, and etc. And one of the really fun events this year was the Zone Challenge. It entailed changing four tires on an 911, ala NASCAR, a Porsche Pull, and a Porsche Push. Zone 7 was the final winner of the Challenge which was held over a three day period. A lot of cheering from each zone made the contest fun. Our Zone Rep Linda Bein was carrying a placard and yelling loudly for Zone 6 until they were eliminated in the tire changing contest.
There are some good photos of Parade Portland on the PCA website if you care to go there. You will see Noblitt's car in the Conours photos.

Heck, there is just too much to tell in a short article. Ask Joe, Robin, and Steven about the Parade when you see them for more details.

Also of note was Mike Robbins from Indiana. This was his 49th Parade (out of 51) and he drove the same 356 convertible to Parade Portland that he drove to his first Parade, and it now has 505,000 miles on the odometer. Talk about cars lasting a lifetime, his Porsche is it.

Finally, start making plans for next years Parade at San Diego. I am a personal friend of their S.D. Parade Chairman Paul Young, and he assured me that it will be the best ever. July 4th, 2007 will be spent on an aircraft carrier deck for the Victory Banquet. It should be awesome!

GERMAN CAR SHOW 2005

Hot cars on a Hot day, but 20 German Cars make it to the first annual German Car Show on the "Green" at Rocky Mountain College. With cars from 1963 to 2005 - Porsches, BMW's Mercedes and VWs were represented. Suprisingly no Audis, but this is just the first year. Early arrivals sought out the east side for shade for their cars, later arrivals got the west side to see shade only in the afternoon. Of course all drivers and friends setup under the many trees on this beautiful campus. Notes were compared, stories were told and about noon food was served thanks to Jerry's special portable kitchen. Host Fred Magers presented awards in the early afternoon. Click Here for Photo Gallery of Show.

And the winners are:

New officers were elected and the motto is "DO MORE in 2004"

2004 Black Hills Trip "Do the Deux"
by Dave Veile

The Run To The Hills was a great weekend of Porsches and people. The scenery was magnificent. The weather was perfect!
The weekend got of to a good start when the Veile's met the Ellis' at Sheridan, Wyoming for the drive to Rapid City, South Dakota. The bonus was Jerry McDonald who has got his 912 running again with a slightly larger engine. Jerry had not originally planned on making the trip, but on Thursday changed his mind.
Jean and Shirley Ellis were in "her car" which they recently purchased in Wisconsin. It is a very lovely 1982 911SC. It had had excellent care by the previous owner. It is Champagne Metallic with a brown leather interior. You will know it is Shirley when you see the car around Billings as her thoughtful husband, Jean, has got her the prestige plate " TEXASXX ", which means Texas female! And Shirley say the car is "a she", name to be decided later.
We departed Sheridan and drove to Gillette where we stopped for fuel. Gas was $1.939 for premium in Gillette. After the pit stop we headed on for Rapid City. About 10 miles east of Gillette Jerry got a red warning light on his dash. It was originally diagnosed as voltage regulator failure, and later found to be the generator which had failed. We continued on to Rapid City and got there about 6:00 PM, checked in, then headed back to the atrium to meet and visit with other Porsche owners. Jerry was able to drive the 912 on the entire weekend thanks to the dual battery setup in the 912. Talk about German engineering.
There were three PCA zones represented at the event: Zone 6 and our zone rep. Linda Bein and her husband Bill; Zone 8 and zone rep Kathy Fricke from Denver; and Zone 10 and their zone rep Joe Rathman and wife Michelle from St. Louis, MO. There were 6 PCA regions in attendance. The Dakotas Region (SiouxFalls) which had 9 cars; Rocky Mountain Region and Alpine Region which had 22 cars; Absaroka Region with 5 cars; High Desert Region (Linda & Bill Bein) with one car; and St. Louis Region (Joe Rothman) with one car.
Those members from Absaoka Region making the trip were Jerry McDonald, Shirley and Jean Ellis of Billings; Kermit and JoAnn Ragain of Glendive; Scott Zeiske of Rapid City and Diana and David Veile of Worland, WY(named in order by whose car was used).
Dinner on Friday evening was on your own. We all met in the cocktail lounge and visited and met a lot or really nice people. Our
group then split up with Jean and Jerry going out for Vietnamese food and the rest of us ate at the hotel. There seemed to be something mentioned about not eating "institutional food" by someone, but I can't quite remember who. Anyway, the two of them enjoyed the food they found off premises.
In the morning we all met for breakfast, then attended the drivers meeting at 9:30 AM. Following the meeting we (40 plus cars) headed off for Spearfish to start the drive up Spearfish Canyon for lunch at the Latchstring Inn. We met lots of neat cars on the drive as there was a major car show and tour being staged in Deadwood during the weekend. It was hotrod and old car heaven, with a few Porsches thrown in for good measure.
After lunch we all head for Deadwood and the start of the rally portion of the tour. The rally consisted of two page of questions about various things found along the tour route. Our group pulled into the Prairie Berrie Winery north of Hill City to sample some of their wines and to buy a bottle or two. Then it was onto to Hill City for some fuel, a pop, and then onto the Crazy Horse Memorial site.
All of us parked in the area that was reserved for our great German cars. It provided another opportunity to meet and visit with more new faces, and to take photos with the Crazy Horse mountain in the background. Our group spent about an hour at the monument. We then traveled through Custer State Park and on to the Mount Rushmore Memorial. We all arrived at Rushmore about 5:30 PM.
The cars were all parked on the 6th Level of the parking garage (top & outside) where it provided an excellent opportunity for all of us to take photos of our cars with Mount Rushmore as the backdrop. Our group had previously decided to park together for a group photo op. It was great! The tour group then went on into the Mt. Rushmore site, shopped in the gift shop, had dinner, and then waited for the lighting ceremony. One exception was Jerry McDonald who left the area about 7:30PM as he did not want to run his battery dead by driving with headlights while it was dark. Jerry also made a second trip to the Siagon Restaurant while the rest of us were relegated to "institutional food."
The lighting ceremony started at 9:00 PM, with the actual lighting taking place at 9:30 PM. It was a great lesson in why the four president were picked, and what they had stood for. After the ceremony we all headed for the hotel in Rapid City.
The next morning Absaroka got together for breakfast, and about 9:00AM we headed out for our homes. Ellis' and Jerry traveled together to Billings via I90; Ragain's headed up 85 to Glendive, and the Veile's made a stop at Deadwood, then drove on to Devil's Tower via Hulett, Wyoming. The Veile' met up with the Colorado group at Devil's Tower and had lunch with them before departing for home.
Just some sidelights of the trip: The mileage driven in the Black Hills on Saturday mounted up to 207 miles; We did not get all of the rally questions answered correctly, but got most of them right, and guessed at the rest (we were poor guessers). The traffic in the Black Hills was not overwhelming and I did not hear one person gripe about congestion, food, or having a bad time. The hotel was more than accomodating, the organization was great, and if you missed this trip it is your misfortune.
All of us from Absaroka who made the trip owe a tip of the hat to John Forrette, LuVern Boes, Tim Powell and other members of the Sioux Falls Region. You guys made this trip worthwhile. Thanks from all of us. As the Governator says, "I'll be back!"

The Driver's Education Event for the
Big Sky Region PCA club is May 15 - 16, 2004.
Comments by Bill Witcher

Saturday the first day, saw about 35 cars and drivers show up. Dave Cooley, who has been running these events said, this was over twice the number to ever attend. Add in friends and family and there was quite a crowd for this day long run for knowledge and fun. With this many cars, the tech inspection took a little time, but they were up and running by mid morning and it kept going strong all afternoon, under clear but cool skies.

The Porsche contingent might have been outnumbered, but in diversity we started
with Bob Petitt's race prepared '67 911s and included 911s, 993s, 944s, 968 even three 928s. On the new Porsche front the "I don't care how much it costs - I want to go fast group" included Roberto Alvarez's GT2, Rob Terry's Turbo and Jean Ellis' GT3.

First run of day, I worked the first corner while the hot shoes gave a little demo run in the Turbo, GT2 and GT3. Quite a show from on the track. With passing only allowed on front straight near pit area position changes were few, but there were position changes and Absaroka's Jean Ellis GT3 took the lead. Now someone is going to have to come up with the "440 large" to get a 2004 Carrera GT.

On the Driver's Education side we had about 20 novices in a wide variety of rides, but they seemed to be having the time of their lives. A few spins in the grass, but no harm and lesson learned. Congratulations to Dave Cooley and his crew. Dave looked a little dazed and confused based on the number of people who showed up, he did get in at least one solo run, because I waved him past and gave chase for one of my more exciting runs of the day.

I managed to get in three good multi-lap runs not counting the few I sneaked in Friday night after we setup. By 6 when I departed a few last runs were in progress, but those staying looked forward to more runs on Sunday. Will have to get a report on that, but for now I think I will take a hot bath, then wash to car.

See Photo Gallery 2004
Comments from Jean Ellis:
Sunday started out cold and cloudy and just kept getting worse, including rain and wind. Still folks were running in the rain. Make plans for September.

Comments from Bob Petitt: Bob was one of the the DE instructors.
"On Sunday morning, Dean Sukin arrived from Billings in Jean's former C4S. Dean and I went out for Instructor laps and I really enjoyed driving a Modern car given the adverse weather conditions. As quoted from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, "If you have the means, I highly recommend one." Awesome car, 120-125mph into the back side kink, I was lifting to about 110 through the kink and back on it into the 2nd corner worker station at about 130.
Dean was learning very quickly and I hope we have another DE weekend addict."

"Alway Lead - Never Follow"

For those of you who like Porsche wheel to wheel racing, above is our own Bob Petitt's newly completed 911S @ Second Creek in July. Looks like he has the inside line, but reports that orange 911 blew his doors off later. Next race - "Dr's Turbo Consortium" Lewistown - see below.

Saturday Show & Shine had only 4 cars so we went to track and set it up and drove it for several hours - see what you missed. Also Dave had a Porsche Trivia Quiz. Guess he will advise winners and I will post them here. Of course if my score is embarrasingly low it might time some time to post.

Sunday morning was beautiful and got started a little late, but this year a dozen cars made it to this DE Event. 6 were Porsches (only on aircooled- actually oil cooled - see Trivia Quiz). Most cars were from Big Sky region. From Absaroka, Robert Terry in his new Turbo and Bill Witcher in his old 928. A group of young drivers came anxious to learn and I'm sure they had fun and learned how to handle their cars. It's a beautiful facililty, getting better every year as the State develops it's driver programs. Buses, Ambulances, Trucks and even Skid Cars for the new Skid Pad. Saturday night we got to watch the school bus class doing there thing. Track is lined and smooth with great pit area and the buildings with flowers and landscaping.

Thanks Dave and Jim for a good event.
